Rolls-Royce expands global capability

Rolls-Royce today announced plans to invest in two new aero engine facilities in Singapore and in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States. The Company had previously announced that it was considering possible locations in Asia and the US.

Over the last decade, Rolls-Royce has established a strong position in global markets. In the light of this success, the Company is investing in new capability in order to meet the increasing needs of its global business and its growing customer base around the world.

The decision to locate the new facilities in the US and Singapore has been driven by three strategic considerations: the attractions of locating major facilities close to customers in two of the largest and fastest growing aerospace markets in the world; the business continuity benefits that will arise from locating the assembly and test of Trent engines on two continents; and a reduction in the Companys exposure to the dollar.

Breakers primed for hostile reception

The Breakers are ready to step into the cauldron of playoff basketball for the first time, adamant the Taipans' fanatic home crowd won't affect them in Cairns on Thursday night.

The Breakers' first tilt at a quarter-final in the NBL will take place in front of 5335 orange-clad Taipans fans.

Coach Andrej Lemanis says the atmosphere will be electric, but the team's final regular season match in Perth last Saturday was "great preparation" despite the 98-85 loss.

"It doesn't get more hostile than Perth," Lemanis said. "We as a team did a good job of focusing on what we had to do in that environment and the crowd didn't affect us at all.

"When all you have is each other you get an 'us versus the world' mentality. You can derive strength from that.

Owner Fred Wilpon says 'it's a championship season' for Mets

PORT ST. LUCIE - Fred Wilpon, whose spring-training declarations usually teeter between vague and unambitious, this time offered a concrete, borderline Steinbrenneresque expectation.

After authorizing a $140 million payroll - a franchise record by roughly $20 million - the one-time author of "meaningful games in September" fully expects the Mets to be playing games in October. Make that late October.

"It's a championship season," said Wilpon, in unusually blunt terms, during an early afternoon address at the team's complex. "We expect to be in the playoffs, and deep into the playoffs. That's our expectation."

With his son, chief operating officer Jeff, by his side for the first time during a spring address, the 71-year-old Wilpon suggested he suffered daily heartache this winter as a result of the Mets' late-season collapse.

Carty: Don't make excuses for Rodriguez's exit strategy

I just hope more articles get written about the direction and future of U-M football and not just what happened or didn't happen when the U-M coach left WVU. The manner in which he left is history and can't be changed. Can't we just all move along, Jim?

The last Nimitz-class aircraft carrier is under construction in ...

The design of the USS Nimitz began in 1964, and the 10-ship class has lasted longer than previous classes.

"The Nimitz class … represents the largest number of carriers of any type of any nation built to the same basic design since World War II," according to Norman Polmar, author of "The Naval Institute’s Guide to the Ships and Aircraft of the U.S. Naval Fleet." He termed the Nimitz’s longevity "a remarkable and probably unique life span for a warship design."

The USS Nimitz was commissioned in 1975, and the George H.W. Bush — the last of the ships — will be deactivated in 2059, after 50 years of service.

That’s a possible 84 years of the same basic design on the seas.

The Nimitz class borrowed from previous carriers. The flight deck layout is essentially unchanged from the USS Kitty Hawk and John F.

McCain Blasts Report on Lobbyist Relationship

McCain called a press conference in Toledo, Ohio, to slam the paper for embellishing his committee activities on Iseman's behalf.

"I'm very disappointed in The New York Times piece. It's not true," he said.

Asked about his relationship with the lobbyist, he said, "I have many friends in Washington who represent various interests and … I consider her a friend."

He said he saw her "on occasion" at fundraisers, receptions and committee meetings, but that was all.

His wife Cindy defended her husband, saying, "He's a man of great character and I'm very disappointed in The New York Times."

iMovie versus Final Cut Express

When I learned that I'd be part of the Macworld Video production team, I was both excited and more than a bit apprehensive. I was excited because I enjoy working in video, though it never seems I have enough time to do so, and nervous because Apple had recently (with the introduction of iLife '08) basically killed off my video production tool of choice: iMovie HD. iLife '08 includes a program named iMovie '08, but it's related to its predecessor in name only—iMovie '08 is a completely new program.

While iMovie '08 added a number of interesting features beyond those offered in iMovie HD, it also removed quite a few, and more importantly to me, created a completely new paradigm for video editing. In a typical video-editing app, such as iMovie HD, you have a spot to store your video clips, and a timeline on which to place them.
