The times they are a changin

Imagine that Egypt, once a major wheat producer, is now importing wheat from the US. Why? Because that’s what foreign powers dictate. So instead of sponsoring our own farmers, we’re sponsoring American farmers,” El-Oksori shouts, his eyes bulging.

“Nasser had the courage to say no to the foreign powers when it involved the future of something as major as the High Dam. Now, we can’t say no to the minor things. I’m not siding with Nasser, I’m siding with an ideology: the dignity of a nation. But don’t get me wrong! We believe in the private and public sector alike, but the private sector should fall under the supervision of the public sector, it should produce basic commodities we need, like the bread loaf, not Chipsy [the popular brand of potato chips].”

El-Oksori, whose slogan is “Rebuilding the Egyptian Citizen,” is the first to admit that “some people would groan that I’m taking them back to the old days of Socialism.

It's getting down to the final days of the Texas primary campaign, and that means it's time for the campaigns to play the expectations game.

First we have Barack Obama's folks, making a "lowered expectations" play, followed by a deft maneuver to set expectations for the other side.

"In Ohio and Texas, the races are very, very close," Obama campaign strategist Steve Hildebrand said today. "We have had a consistent deficit in both states. She started almost 20 points ahead in both of these states.

"We have narrowed that to within the margin of error. We are still behind but are hoping to win — but frankly we don't have the highest of expectations to win. These are difficult states."

Then there's a quick shift from defense to offense by David Plouffe, Obama's national campaign manager, who wants reporters to focus on Obama's lead in pledged delegates from previous primaries.

Some 43 percent said increasing government spending on health care, education and housing programs would help a great deal; 36 percent said cutting taxes.

"Let's stop paying for this war," said Hilda Sanchez, 44, of Waterford, Calif.

"There are a lot of people who are struggling. We can use the money to pay for medical care and help people who were put out of their homes."

If You're Ever in Mashpee

Daily luncheon specials starting at $4.95 with a one price kids menu of $6.95. Well known for its hand made pizza , sandwiches and burgers I guarantee you’ll take half of it home for the following days lunch. Pasta, soup and salads, and full diner entrees including cod, scallops, casseroles, and a wide variety of meat dishes also catch your eye. One of the local favorite is their overly generous Chicken Pot Pie, to much for me in one sitting.

There is a cozy bar off the dining area, and a feature I have always admired in a restaurant, a full view kitchen. Not many restaurants want you to see the food being prepared. At Carbo’s they welcome it. The friendly staff tending to your needs with appropriate timing was a joy as well. Head Chef Mike O’Brien is proud of the fact that the wide ranging desert menu items are all made there.

Unraveling TV's switch from analog to digital

But it's pretty clear which business interests stand to gain.

Cable and satellite TV companies could see a wave of new subscribers as people with older TVs pass on hooking up converter boxes to older televisions or buying new sets. Local stations are already using some of the extra capacity digital broadcasting frees up by launching auxiliary TV channels with weather and traffic reports, and they're looking for ways to bring programming to portable devices.

The Federal Communications Commission began the switch many years ago to free up a large chunk of U.S. airwaves, which the government is in the process of auctioning off, a process that will net billions of dollars for public coffers. Making all UHF broadcast spectrum above channel 52 available will allow for powerful new wireless services, and possibly for a new network for public safety officials to use during disasters.

Immokalee rapist to be deported under sentence

A 22-year-old Immokalee man charged with raping a woman inside her home and then threatening to kill her when she tried to call 911 will be deported to Mexico under a plea deal.

Collier County Circuit Judge Fred Hardt adjudicated Jose Manuel guilty of felony battery and sentenced him Monday to time served in the county jail since his March 26 arrest and three years of state probation. However, Hardt suspended that term because Manuel is being transported to Miami for a deportation hearing.

Manuel had faced up to 15 years in a state prison on sexual battery, a second-degree felony rape charge. But under a plea agreement, Manuel pleaded no contest to a third-degree felony, a lesser-and-included charge.

The agreement was reached because he's being held for deportation and the victim could not be located by Monday, the day of Manuel's trial.

There are lots of ways that people try and show who the best is at a variety of topics. You've got the old standby, who can drink the most beer. Then there is who can land the best looking guy/girl, and you can always resort back to who makes more money as a way to prove who's better.

In the world of computers and overclocking the way you prove you are better than the rest is with synthetic benchmark scores. Depending on what site you read for your hardware reviews synthetic scores for video cards and computer systems are either a great way to tell how a video card performs or a fat waste of time. Personally I don't care how you measure the performance of a video card in a review, so long as you do it the same way each time so I can get an idea of the parts relative performance.

50 YEARS, THATS PROBABLY JUST ABOUT RIGHT. And you are entitled to your opinion! In the good old days you could sort out the scum yourself. The polis just turned their backs and went into the local pub for a few free beers. Those were the days, bring them back![bold]bold[/bold] .

• We're so happy for Paris Hilton. Seen parading around town with a shaman, the former sex-tape star is apparently seeking a path to enlightenment. Good thing that path no longer involves things like getting photographed doing strange and unpredictable things in public. Oh, how she has grown.

• Speaking of Paris, boyfriend Benji Madden's ex is speaking out, saying he didn't leave her for Hilton. "We both decided, as adults, our relationship had run its course and decided to move on," says Sophie Monk. It's very noble of Sophie to take the high road, but we hope she'll soon reconsider.
