SILVER SPRING, Md., Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Animal Planet president and general manager Marjorie Kaplan has announced three new series to debut over the next year as the network rebrands beginning on February 3, 2008. The new series -- GROOMER HAS IT, WHALE WARS and A YEAR WITH LIONS -- are all reflective of the network's new brand definition of entertaining and instinctually-charged storytelling that is emotionally tethered with the animal kingdom.

"I'm excited to share these new series with our audiences and deliver on Animal Planet's new brand promise," notes Kaplan. ATLANTA Federal inspections will be carried out at hundreds of plants where combustible dust is a workplace hazard, a top safety official said Monday at a sugar refinery where dust is suspected of causing a deadly explosion.

Ed Foulke Jr., head of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, announced the inspections while visiting the Imperial Sugar refinery in Port Wentworth, where a blast on Feb. 7 killed 12 workers injured dozens more.

OSHA has not completed its investigation of that explosion but is sending letters to 30,000 companies that deal with combustible dust to discuss the dangers, Foulke said in a telephone interview.

Japan may move to support crashing dollar

Japan's industrial output fell 2pc in January on slowing exports to the US, Europe, and lately the rest of Asia.

While China has held up well so far, there is mounting evidence that tighter credit rules are starting to bite.

The Xinhua Finance index of business confidence fell from 67.7 to 60.3 in February and production index tumbled from 61.1 to 51.3. "Over coming months, we expect this deteriorating outlook to becoming increasingly evident in industrial production," said Barclays Capital.

China's yuan has risen 2.6pc against the dollar this year alone as Beijing attempts to head off an inflationary crisis. Prices rose 7.1pc in January, with clear signs of knock-on effects into pay demands. The minimum wage in Guangdong is to rise 18pc in April. The triple effects of tight credit, inflation, and a rising yuan are squeezing export margins, tipping hundreds of companies into the red.

Witness: Shooting victim unarmed

Swingle said in order for a law enforcement officer to be justified in using deadly force, he must act under the reasonable belief such action is necessary to protect his own life and safety and that of others.

The only role of the prosecutor during an inquest is to "have the truth come out," Swingle said.

Swingle said that the public nature of an inquest in this type of case can serve to quell speculation that anything is being swept under rug because the person in question is a law enforcement officer.

According to Department of Corrections policy concerning fugitive apprehension agents, deadly force may not be used to make an arrest or to prevent escape unless there is reasonable belief that the suspect is attempting to escape by using a deadly weapon, or may otherwise endanger life or inflict serious physical injury unless immediately apprehended.

Viewer Comments On Snowmobiling Safety

We go appropriate speeds and very slow when getting on and off trails. With any sport it can be safe if the right safety precautions are taken. Many people die going over lakes also if you check the record. Why are the lakes not checked in the morning and closed off if not safe. Read those statistics. Really sad. Another issue with the people who are drinking and driving the sleds is that you have to remember the cold feels like it sobers you up. So although they maybe drunk as soon as the cold air hits them they think they can do anything. We only snowmobile in Michigan. I do think the law where they can attach the DUI penalty to your drivers license has helped. I do wish they would do more. It is a great sport. --DonnaFirst let me first express my condolences to all of you who worked with Randy Salerno, it always hard to loose a co-worker and friend in thier prime of life.

AMERICA'S CUP: Swiss and American clubs continue to battle over next ...

New York Supreme Court Judge Herman Cahn ruled in December that Alinghi, the sailing syndicate that represents SNG, must face a boat from Golden Gate YC in 10 months.

Judge Cahn invalidated an earlier challenge from a Spanish yacht club that the Americans had argued was a puppet organization formed expressly to give Alinghi unprecedented and unfair control of an America's Cup that the Swiss had planned for 2009.

It didn't help the Swiss cause when officials from that Spanish club amiably admitted that they were just a legal fiction that would let SNG control the event and keep the money it brings in Valencia, Spain, where Alinghi successfully defended the cup last July.

Cahn ruled last month that the Spanish club didn't meet the standards of the 1887 Deed of Gift that governs America's Cup competition.

Oh give me a home, where armed boys and mentors roam

The South Dakota House sang its own version of that song yesterday when members voted 41-28 to approve what is being referred to as the mentor bill.

And, indeed, there would be plenty of mentoring involved if HB1263 becomes law. At least, we hope there would be.

If you're going to send a 10-year-old kid afield with a loaded gun, it's a good idea to have some pretty intense adult supervision. 1263, which now heads for the Senate, is designed to provide that - while lowering the legal hunting age from 12 to 10.

The adult mentor would need to pass a firearms safety course before taking the kid out. And they could only hunt in small groups of six or less. The kid couldn't be banging away at antlered trophies, either. The law would provide a special license good only for anterless big-game animals.

Scott Boras starts to gets a clue - sort of

Joe Crede made just under $5M last year for the White Sox. Garrett Atkins made $400,000 last year for the Colorado Rockies. Lowell will want a lot more as a FA. Crede, coming off major back surgery, is a big question mark.. Atkins would fit perfectly in the Yankees current cut payroll philosophy...I agree whole heartedly with todays previous squawkers who touted Garrett Atkins. All things considered, it seems like a no-brainer...but as a wise man once said, "things are not always as they seem". Just ask those fans who wanted Detroit and Cleveland vs. the Yanks in the last 2 ALDS. On paper though its Garrett Atkins......

Genentech's Avastin Effective At Treating Breast Cancer, Study Says

FDA's Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee in December 2007 voted 5-4 against recommending that the agency approve marketing for the drug, the Times reports. The advisory panel based its decision on a separate study that found the drug's effectiveness in slowing the progression of the disease did not outweigh its toxic side effects (New York Times, 2/13). Genentech in a statement said it believes that the results of the new study "provide confirmation of Avastin's efficacy and safety in this patient population" (New York Times, 2/13). Hal Barron, Genentech's chief medical officer in a statement said, "We are pleased that a second Phase III study in this population of breast cancer patients showed a significant improvement in progression-free survival." He added, "The trial also demonstrated Avastin's potential with a different chemotherapy in this disease" (Berkrot, Reuters, 2/12).
