Scripps debuts online forum for political discussion

It will also offer political news, e-mail service for subscribers, a daily public opinion poll and a feature called "Truth or Not" that will examine "the veracity of factual claims made by high-profile newsmakers and others," according to the release.

"RedBlueAmerica is a place for people interested in what the other half thinks on the important and interesting issues of the day," said John Temple, founder of the site and vice president of news for Scripps' newspaper division, in the release.

Discussion on the site, which is supported by advertising, will be moderated by Ben Boychuk, an editorial writer for Investors Business Daily and a blogger, who will represent the "red" side; and Joel Mathis, a blogger and reporter, who will represent the "blue" side.

After the November elections, the site will continue to serve as a forum for cultural and political views, the company said.

Chicago Irish Film Festival offers an early taste of St. Patrick's Day

Like so many of the best sports-themed movies, "Saviours" has breadth far beyond its subject matter. A boxing movie that's only nominally about boxing, this self-proclaimed "no-budget" documentary follows three aspiring boxers as they train for the 2005 Irish Senior Championships.

Hard architecture and urban grit will be missed

The work of Jeff Stinson and Adrian DiCastri, two architects who defined architecture in very different ways, stands as a testament to their imagination, their urban grit and their tenacity. Both men recently died of cancer, surrounded by their respective families, on the very same day. Yet their architecture - their belief in the making of a triumphant city - lives on.

A writer leaves behind books. A musician the sound of a recording. An architect gives us permanent placemakers: Signposts. Cultural guides. Buildings to frame human experience. But, whereas a painting by an artist typically hangs behind walls in a contained space, there's an extra responsibility that accompanies the profession of architecture. Stinson (an Australian-born professor who taught with remarkable energy) and DiCastri (an Italian-Canadian whose large commissions often provoked his wry sense of humour) understood the heaviness of setting down acts of permanence.

Text-Message Warnings Broadcast During NIU Campus Danger

Immediate alerts became a priority after Virginia Tech was criticized for a slow response that some said might have given the gunman more time to kill. However, communication is only part of a wholesale rethinking about how to prepare for the worst, an effort that has swept campuses across the nation. Mental health professionals studied how to spot warning signs in students coping with mental illnesses.

How Barack Obama has made this the most riveting presidential race in ...

It took an hour for the crush of people to leave the Nashua parking lot, the candidate included. With his wife, Michelle, campaigning for him elsewhere in the state, and his two daughters, Malia and Sasha, being cared for by their maternal grandparents back home in Chicago - he called them every day and sometimes got a video hook-up - Obama waited inside his campaign bus, making calls to his supporters, hitting donors up for money, and watching football on the TV.

Obama wrapped up every speech with a discourse on his campaign theme of "hope" and "change." It was something Clinton took aim at, after Obama's upset victory in the Iowa caucuses on Jan. 3 torpedoed her long-time national front-runner status and damaged her presidential hopes. She seemed shocked, and with only five days between Iowa and New Hampshire, grasped for ways to shut Obama down.

Optimal band imaging with endoscopy facilitates the diagnosis of ...

OAK BROOK, Ill. February 18, 2008 A study from the Jichi Medical University in Japan shows that optimal band imaging used with an endoscope provided images that clearly identified depressed-type early gastric cancer without magnification in 96 percent of study participants. The study appears in the February issue of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the monthly peer-reviewed scientific journal of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Gastric cancer is one of the most prevalent types of cancer in the world. If gastric cancer is found early, the five-year survival rate increases nearly 90 percent. In contrast, most patients with advanced gastric cancer have a poor prognosis. Gastric cancer is classified as elevated, flat and depressed types. Despite improvements in endoscopic technologies, depressed-type early gastric cancer is challenging to diagnose because it manifests as subtle changes in color and shape.
