Girls Get Geekier

Any time I come across software developers or visit an IT business, one thing immediately strikes me – where are the women? For all the talk of girl geeks, computing - and technology more generally - is still a very male-dominated business. Even a few months back at a meeting of would-be Facebook application developers – a very young crowd - there must have been ten men for every woman.

But that could be about to change. A new survey out today from a major supermarket (no, I'm not going to name them – but the research looks reasonably sound) suggests that girls may now be better at some computing tasks than boys. The survey of more than a thousand 7-16 year olds found that girls were more likely to know how to create a word document, put a profile on a social network or upload a video onto YouTube.

First Responders Say Advanced Technology Critical for Effectiveness

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Feb. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) and the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) today released the findings of a national survey to assess how public safety organizations use current communications technology and what future capabilities they would deploy to help improve emergency response, officer effectiveness and public and officer safety.

Key survey findings reveal a strong demand for technology solutions that provide advanced situational awareness to first responders, improve incident coordination, and streamline emergency response. A top concern of first responders nationwide is their ability to react to natural disasters (65%), superseding both terrorist attacks (7%) and crime (10%). Regional fire and police officials dually note that advanced communications technology ranks as the most critical aid in preparedness and response both now and in the future.

Auto BMW Develops IP-based Networking for Next Gen Vehicles

BMW is no stranger to high-tech computer wizardry in its vehicles. The German company befuddled BMW owners around the world with the introduction of the Windows CE-based iDrive driver information center in the current 7-Series. iDrive, which has been panned by most enthusiasts and auto journalists, later filtered down to the 5-Series, 3-Series, 6-Series, 1-Series and X5.

Since the introduction of iDrive way back in 2002, many manufacturers have introduced their own control schemes with varying amount of control knobs and buttons to control everything from basic vehicle functions to the intensity of interior lighting -- most of which are far more intuitive than iDrive.

BMW is looking to make another leap forward with the introduction of Internet Protocol (IP) networking in future automobiles.

Max train and bus collide, train derails

The collision happened at approximately 7:15 pm at Southwest 3rd Avenue and Southwest Yamhill Street.

TriMet's Mary Fetsch said the bus was headed south and the train was eastbound.

"The bus ran into the train and derailed the train, so the question is 'Who had the right of way and how did this happen?'" Fetsch said. "It was kind of a T-bone where the front of the bus hit the front of the train."

Fetsch said there was damage to the front of the train and the overhead wires. She expected train service to be disrupted until at least 9:30 pm.

TriMet was running shuttle busses between the Rose Quarter and PGE Park in both directions Friday night.

Fetsch said one person on the bus suffered minor injuries.

Making baby 'extra special'

Considering the calendar-correction oddity only comes once every four years, Elizabeth defied 1,461 to 1 odds to become the talk of the family. "Every baby is special, but this just makes her extra special," Andrea Thomas said. Elizabeth wasn't supposed to be a Leap Day baby. In fact, she wasn't supposed to be a February baby at all. Her original due date was March 26, but that was later moved up to March 19. Since she was going to miss out on a spring birth anyway, Elizabeth decided to speed things up a bit and take a shot at making Thomas family history. Neither Andrea nor her husband, Bill, have Leap Day births in their families. "Everyone I work with thought it would be a Leap Day baby. They said I was ornery enough to have one," Andrea said. Andrea started having contractions eight days before she gave birth and made two false alarm trips to Fort Madison Community Hospital over the past week.

Will Sam Gash be new RB coach?

Do you think that Barry Sanders would've retired if he had the same offensive line that the Emmit Smith had? Dudes, Barry would've probably pushed that record up another 3000 or more yards in less time than Emmit would've caught it and everyone believes that BECAUSE IT'S ALL TRUE. Maybe instead of seeing a 2000 yard season you'd see a 2500 yard season with an awesome offensive line.

There are a lot of people that despise Kitna around here. I think that after the Arizona game he was trying too hard to make something happen so he could live up to his prediction. I think that maybe God didn't answer his prayer because maybe he shouldn't be so bold? I think that maybe God humbled him a little bit instead of willing the Lions to a 10 win season. I mean, a 10 win season is a bold statement when you won 3 games the year before and the team has sucked for so long.

A daughter remembers the Dodgers’ of f icial photographer

Major League Baseball blogger Derek Savage recently wrote: “They were the only team in MLB history to be named for a neighborhood rather than a city or state. It was all about community. The Dodgers were family; a metaphor for life in America. In the 1950s, the Brooklyn Dodgers were America."

There is a photograph of me at age 10 taking pictures of Jackie Robinson in the dugout with my Brownie. I had first met Jackie and his family in 1948 in Dodgertown. Little did I know at the time the significance of Jackie's presence on the bench. It was my early introduction to race relations.

And there are pictures of me with Vic Lombardi, Carl “Oisk" Erskine, Pee Wee Reese, Gil Hodges and other idols of the day. Dad loved to take the more personal, candid, quirky shots of the Dodgers' lives off the field, so there are lots of pictures of the players in funny poses which bring back those simpler times.

Domino's Pizza Builds on Heritage with Launch of 'You Got 30 Minutes'

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Dec. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Domino's Pizza (NYSE: DPZ) , the recognized world leader in pizza delivery, is launching a rebranding campaign, "You Got 30 Minutes," with agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky (CP+B, www.cpbgroup.com). The campaign builds on the company's 30- minute delivery heritage by highlighting the value of what pizza delivery really does for consumers - gives them free time.

This time around, there's no guarantee of delivery within 30 minutes as there was in Domino's past. Instead, the message to consumers is that they have free time -- about 30 minutes -- to do whatever they want, because Domino's Pizza is taking care of the meal.

"We're presenting consumers with the gift of time, which is something our customers all need more of," says Ken Calwell, Domino's chief marketing officer.
